Proprietary Entrapment of Customers - Open Source "Flavor" in Software Supplier Business Models - Ludovic Schurr, Linagora

Practical, business experience shows that not all business models labeled "Open Source" or "FOSS" deserve these qualifications. In a context of growing interest in Free and Open Source Sotware, many software companies have designed various business models in order to attract prospects interested in benefitting from Open Source software and its advantages of independance, cost-cutting, and resource-pooling.
Not all of these business models, however, are faithful to the principles of FOSS. Some are simply proprietary business models with an open source "flavor", but that will not offer any of the expected Free & Open Source advantages mentioned above.
The aim of this talk is to present these various business models, to compare "freemium" to dual-licensing and to the "free-free" (as in both speech & beer) business model, and to raise awareness about the practical consequences for car manufacturers of ordering their embedded and/or infotainment software from subcontractors, depending on their particular business model.
The talk will also cover a couple practical user cases that Linagora had to solve, in the course of its Open Source Software Assurance activity, for clients who have been unwitting victims of proprietary / freemium software entrapment.
